Riverhawk Races 2026

The Riverhawk Races returned to Mount Holly, NC on Saturday, April 18, 2026, bringing together runners, families, and community supporters for a vibrant and well-organized day of racing. Hosted by the Mount Holly Community Development Foundation (MHCDF), this year’s event showcased not only the growing enthusiasm for local running events, but also the strength of a community committed to connection, wellness, and fun.

Under the leadership of race chair Daniel Richard, with the support of MHCDF treasurer Christie Reeves, and the MHCDF Board, the 2026 Riverhawk Races featured three race experiences designed to welcome participants of all ages and skill levels: the Greenway 5K, the Tailrace 10K, and the Kids Tadpole Dash. With 160 registrants across all events, the race struck a perfect balance—large enough to generate excitement and competition, yet intimate enough to maintain a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere.

Race day began early, as volunteers and organizers transformed the municipal complex into a polished start/finish venue. Branded signage, sponsor banners, and directional markers created a professional race environment, while course guides headed out to their positions to ensure runner safety and accurate navigation—an essential component for any well-executed 5K or 10K.

Participants checked in at the South State Bank registration tent, where they received race bibs and event T-shirts—key elements of the race experience that not only track timing and placement but also serve as lasting mementos. Nearby, runners had the opportunity to prepare both physically and mentally. Down Dog Yoga of Mount Holly led a pre-race stretch session, helping athletes activate key muscle groups and reduce injury risk before the run. Others opted for a caffeine boost from Catawba Coffee, a popular pre-race ritual for many distance runners looking to enhance focus and endurance.

At 9:00 AM sharp, the Tailrace 10K runners took off from the starting line. The 10K distance, a true test of pacing and stamina, challenged participants to balance speed with endurance over the course. Fifteen minutes later, the Greenway 5K runners began their race, tackling a shorter but still demanding route that rewards both seasoned runners and newcomers alike.

As is often the case in well-supported local races, the energy along the course and at the finish line played a huge role in the day’s success. Volunteers, friends, and family members gathered at the finish, providing encouragement that pushed runners through the final stretch. Before long, finishers began crossing the line—first the 10K competitors, followed closely by 5K participants—each achieving a personal victory, whether chasing a podium finish or simply completing the course.

Adding to the excitement, the Kids Tadpole Dash brought a burst of youthful energy to the event. Our lone runner sprinted around the municipal complex, crossing the finish line with enthusiasm and pride, embodying the future of the sport and the community.

Post-race support is a critical part of any distance event, and the Riverhawk Races delivered. A dedicated volunteer team provided water and fresh fruit to help runners rehydrate and begin recovery. From there, participants and spectators were invited to explore a lively vendor and booth area just beyond the finish line.

Community partners played a strong role in enhancing the event experience. Booths from Kinetix Physical Therapy, the YMCA of Gaston County, and the Mount Holly Community Development Foundation offered resources and engagement opportunities. Vendors including Catawba Coffee, Just Dessertz, and ZBQ Barbecue kept attendees fueled, while DJ Buddy Love maintained a high-energy atmosphere throughout the morning.

The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing overall finishers and the top three runners in each age group—a staple of competitive racing that celebrates both elite performance and age-group achievement. These recognitions underscore the inclusive nature of the sport, where athletes compete not only against others but also against their own goals and benchmarks.

The success of the 2026 Riverhawk Races would not have been possible without an extensive network of volunteers who supported every aspect of the event—from race committee planning and sponsorship outreach to course guidance, water stations, registration, and logistics. The MHCDF board’s hands-on involvement ensured that every detail was thoughtfully executed.

Equally important were the event’s sponsors, whose contributions elevated the race experience. Presenting sponsors Clariant and The Vintage Nest led the way, joined by supporter sponsor Muddy River Distillery and race champion sponsors Carolina Family Spine Center, Helt Design, and Kinetix Physical Therapy. Their partnership reflects a shared investment in community health and local engagement.

All told, the 2026 Riverhawk Races delivered an outstanding race-day experience—combining strong organization, enthusiastic participation, and ideal spring weather into a memorable event. As the Mount Holly running community looks ahead, there is clear excitement for continued growth in 2027 and beyond.

For those interested in getting involved next year, whether as a runner, sponsor, or volunteer, stay tuned—because if this year is any indication, the Riverhawk Races are only getting bigger and better.
